It’s really a rather extraordinary accomplishment. Ford F-Series are now the top-selling trucks in the country for the 40th consecutive year, and America’s best-selling vehicle for the 35th time. Ford has now sold more than 26 million F-Series trucks since 1977, which is enough to cover more than 90,000 miles if they were all aid out bumper-to-bumper.

The streak was initiated with the sixth generation F-Series that was introduced in the 1977 model year, as that all-new F-150 light-duty truck featured a V8 engine, standard front disc brakes and an optional extended Super Cab. Building on their momentum, Ford engineers went to work on the new lineup that produced a seventh-generation F-Series that not only continued to set truck sales records but, in 1982, also became the country’s overall best-selling vehicle.

In recognition of the fact that truck customers were using their vehicles for much more than just hauling and towing, Ford divided the F-Series into two separate platforms in 1997: the 10th-generation F-150 was aimed for light-duty users, while the new F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks were marketed to for heavy-duty commercial customers.
