Every day we pass heroes and are unaware of their presence.  We may work beside them or see them walking in the neighborhood. These men and women have been tested and passed with grace and courage. Many of these did this on foreign soil protecting our way of life and standing up for those who could or would not. This Memorial Day as we remember those that fell, here is one that made it home and walks among us.

Everett Davis, a Pruitt Ford driver, is one such hero. Mr. Davis is an unassuming and kind man that is quick with a handshake and a smile. He has always been thought of as a good family man and an outstanding member of the community, but not the typical Hollywood description of a hero.

However, in August of 1970, Gunnery Sergeant Davis was aboard a helicopter that was resupplying troops on the ground in Vietnam. The helicopter malfunctioned upon final approach. It crashed and burst into flames. Disoriented and injured, Davis then led his team members away from the crash. He then heard the screams of another marine, who was trapped in the wreckage and on fire. Marine Gunnery Sergeant Everett Davis went back to the crash and pulled his fellow soldier to safety and then extinguished his burning uniform with his bare hands.

Below are some pictures of the aftermath of the crash.  Also pictured is our hero, Everett Davis, receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.

This weekend is a good time to seek out and thank these heroes and honor the memories of those that did not make it home.
