For the 2017 model update, the Ford Super Duty is shedding the burden of its heavy steel body panels, and slipping into a more comfortable lightweight aluminum. The loss of pounds is just the beginning of the story for the most capable Super Duty ever.

Engineering a truck for towing and hauling is a bit of a balancing act. Add components to give it more strength; it ends up weighing more. It weighs more; it can't haul as much. The durable yet light military-grade aluminum alloy is a windfall, because it means the Super Duty can get beefed up without a net gain in weight.

New to the 2017 model is a fully-boxed, high-strength steel frame. It is 24 times stiffer than the previous generation's c-channel frame, which lets it take full advantage of the updated twin I-beam suspension.

Weight was also added on to enlarge the brakes, and make the axles and driveline stronger.
